Sill could use some help with cones
Hey all, I hate the fact I have to go threw the hassle of proving that I have been doing this most of my life, but the dol persist. I went to the Bremerton dol and rode around back the other day to check their course out. What I found sux. They have a pothole in the beginning of the cones and even after 15 tries, I couldn't get threw it. I went lock to lock and still just ran out of turning radius.
I had no issues with any of the other test (providing I am doing them correctly) but I really could use some help with the cones. I dont see what I am doing incorrectly. Hell, I might not be doing anything incorrectly, but if I am, I could damn sure use the help with it. If there is anyone in the area that has the time to help a fellow rider out with these cones, please post up or msg me. Thanks.

I was originally getting help with 02Gixxer but he is too far away to get there and back in the time he had available and still get home before dark. So we were never able to hook up.

Thanks in advance

Are you talking about the double u-turn?

you need to lean the bike over more and counter-weight it with your body.

If you can come up North, I'll show you. I've shown four kids now how to pass the test. Three past with 100% on SS bikes, and the fourth passed with a 90%.

Live in Marysville, but could meet up in Everett. I know where a course is. Would only take 30 minutes before you get it.

I think he's talking about the cone weave. Not the U-Turn.

Are you trying to modulate your speed through the cones with the throttle?
Try keeping a constant load on the chain by riding the rear brake through the cones to keep you at low speed. That helps two ways: first, it keeps a constant torque on your chain so you don't lurch around and overcompensate from the chain lash and allows you to be nice and smooth at a slow speed. Second, with the engine running a bit higher rpm, you get a slight bit more gyroscopic effect to help you balance at a slower speed. It's not much, but it does help.

Other than that, at extremely slow speeds, counter-leaning can sometimes help to turn in a tighter radius. Your busa's weight and long wheel base make it tougher I'm sure, but the course can be done...just keep practicing it.

I am , but I still cant quite get it to stay within the lines by the end. And yes I am only looking at where I need to end up at and not looking down.

That is like an 1 and a half from here. If you dont mind, I will try to hold out for someone a bit closer before trying to head out that way.

Ahhh the cones. Well when we did them in class, I think most of us were in 2nd gear and the instructors kept stressing to look way way way way way ahead. They would say, you see those trees way off in the distance....look at those. Use your peripheral vision on the cones. As you go thru them, don't look down, stay focused straight ahead. Use your arms and body to just rock back and forth thru those cones. I hope that helps.

I failed to do this with my busa, so after everyone left I stayed at the course and tried some 20 more times. Failed in every attempt. And I'm a good rider, 15+ years of experience. That same day I saw some other riders who have some impressive skills on the track, who also failed at the cone swirl.

It is just not meant to be done on a sports bike. Although not impossible, it's really hard.

Yet I know I could get it right the first time with something like a vespa, so if I ever had to do this again, I would just rent a vespa for one day and practice a couple of times before the actual test, just to get used to such a different machine.

That day, the only guy who actually passed was riding a dirt bike.

if someone has a different bike to borrow for the test, that's the easiest answer. I'd loan you our ninja250 for the day, but we're over an hour from Bremerton.

Are they still doingthe course in poulsbo? I was much smoother surface and more forgiving than Bremerton. Know anyone with a cruiser? I practice low speed riding I'm the empty lot at the mall to get comfortable with laying the bike over and using throttle to control coming out. Also you should be setting up two cones ahead. But I would still check out poulsbo.

Kinda reminds me when i took my MSF class on base, i could not for the life of me pass the double u-turn in a 20' box (somethin like that) without putting my foot down or going outside the box. Then to add insult to injury, this old dude on a goldwing did it like he was on a scooter.......old bastard.....

Anyways, good luck with your test.

Those cones are so freaking small...remember that you only have to weave a few inches left and right to manuever the "slolum." If you can do the couterbalancing in the double S on that big ass bike then you can do the slolum no problem. Speed control and looking ahead like the other guy said (NOT at your front tire) will get you through it. Set a rhythm, control the speed, look ahead = done deal.

Dont be a puss bag!
If you cant make the cone , miss tha cone (they take away less points for a missed cone than a foot down! passed it on my first try , first street bike(2 months streetriding experiance) , first in line with 16 people waiting to go! and missed a few cones! fuggin man up ninja! dont stress just do it

1. Use the friction zone on your clutch to control your speed. Throttle should be steady.

2. Always be looking two cones ahead. It will be in the same line as the one you are on, so it will help with judging your position.

3. The distance your front tire passes to the side of the cone controls your back tires path of travel. If you keep running over cones, too close with the front. If you can't make the next cone, too far away.

I have a CBR1100xx and this can be done!
