This idea has been floated in other threads but hasn't been organized. The idea is to match veteran riders with new PNWR riders in a mentor-mentee relationship, where the vet takes the newb on rides with the intention of improving the newb's skills.

Once the match-up occurs, the team is on its own for scheduling its rides. But, I can forsee where group rides of vet-newb teams could be arranged to provide a more intensive group-dynamic experience.

So, if you are a veteran rider (you know who you are) and you'd like to donate some of your time for the benefit of our newer riders, PM me and I'll add your name to the list of mentors. I ask for PMs because I'd like to gather some basic information from you, such as location, availability for rides, experience, type of riding (sport, touring, cruiser), etc.

Once the names are posted in this thread, then new riders can contact ride leaders on their own. Ride leaders will decide whom and how many they wish to instruct.

This relationship can last as short or as long as the teams wish them to, and ride leaders are welcome to take on one newb or a dozen. But, the ideal is for a 1-on-1 pairing for maximum instruction.

Also, neither vet nor newb assumes any liability for what is taught or for how it is played out during the rides. Everyone assumes their own liability in this inherently dangerous activity.

Would love to get better in cornering (picking lines, adjusting speed and shifting, leaning and getting off the bike properly, ...). Have been riding an FZ6 for nearly a year, and currently live in SE Portland.

I would totally be down for some coaching!

Me:
Rode when I was a teenager early twenties, took 5 years off and now back on the less than a year. No idea how many miles under my belt in total, but less than 5k since the new beginning.

Definately need to work on corner entry and lines, just being fluid on the bike in general.

I live downtown, but also have an office near 82nd, so I'm pretty much down to ride either west or east (prefer west)

Kind of sporadic on times though, I'm self employed so my business hours range a ton, but a few times a week during the evenings and at least one weekend day are usually good bets with me. I'm blind so after the sun goes down I gotta head home.

Bonus, if you are good at helping me with my body positioning and cornering, you can take some runs on my NC35!

Oh, and I like long walks on the beach and beds full of pillows......

This sounds like a great idea. I'd love to be a part of it, but not certain of where'd I fit in. I'm definitely no expert, but not really a novice either. I"ve been riding about 7 years now, but no track experience or formal instruction (although I learned from a lot of good riders in San Jose).

I guess I'd probably benefit most from being a student at this time. I live in SW PDX.

Bill got coached.... that I would have loved to see.

20+ years street, dirt before that (some speedway with my pops)

Miles: probably 50K, only 1 track day though (loved it!!!)

Live: Vancouver.

Ride: Sun-Tues. (work wed-sat nights)

Speed: about a 5-6

Would be glad to help newbies, basics, general insights, tips and tricks, lines, low level maint, etc.

After they surpass my ability (which won't take long ), I can personally vouch for: Lee, Speedgeek, Polvo, Transported, Nails, MMA... and there are many other very good riders in the NW.

(and for you hot-shot new guys reading this, with a couple years under your belt... these guys really are as good as you think you are ) just f.y.i.

I am totally down to both.

Started riding dirt at age 8. Been riding on and off 20+ years. Had a few track days and Doc Wong clinics a few years ago . Not really a fast rider but more like a safe rider. Willing to share and learn. Sunday - wednesday.

Also have books you can borrow- Twist of the Wrist Vols. I and II.

Location : NE Portland near gresham/troutdale

ride: daytona 675

Willing to give pointers to newbies maybe take a couple pics while riding and photoshop it to make it look fast

Well, aren't you the man of my “bikergurl” dreams!!! We might have to skip the resume and just check out your credentials!!

*I grew up in Eugene and still have family down there. Thought of moving to Portland to be a bit closer and now that I know that you all have such a great sport bike community, I just might have to put that back on my list of considerations...

Okay, let's not let this great idea die on the vine.

Why not choose / assign mentor mentee teams, and let's organize a full day ride for this group say to Fossil or similar with plenty of stops for gas / discussion / coaching etc. along the way. This is really the only way for both parties to really understand each other and get something valuable out of this.

After that, down to the individual teams if they continue with same or trade mentor, but I think this is a great place to start.

Am I crazy?

Not at all. Personally, Fossil would be quite the ride for a first time go at this. I'd suggest a run to Carson / Cougar (or similar vicinity) sans slabbing...
