Vet-Newb Coaching
This idea has been floated in other threads but hasn't been organized. The idea is to match veteran riders with new PNWR riders in a mentor-mentee relationship, where the vet takes the newb on rides with the intention of improving the newb's skills.

Once the match-up occurs, the team is on its own for scheduling its rides. But, I can forsee where group rides of vet-newb teams could be arranged to provide a more intensive group-dynamic experience.

So, if you are a veteran rider (you know who you are) and you'd like to donate some of your time for the benefit of our newer riders, PM me and I'll add your name to the list of mentors. I ask for PMs because I'd like to gather some basic information from you, such as location, availability for rides, experience, type of riding (sport, touring, cruiser), etc.

Once the names are posted in this thread, then new riders can contact ride leaders on their own. Ride leaders will decide whom and how many they wish to instruct.

This relationship can last as short or as long as the teams wish them to, and ride leaders are welcome to take on one newb or a dozen. But, the ideal is for a 1-on-1 pairing for maximum instruction.

Also, neither vet nor newb assumes any liability for what is taught or for how it is played out during the rides. Everyone assumes their own liability in this inherently dangerous activity.

I'll begin by putting my name in the hat.

I'm in Southwest Portland off I5 and Barbur Blvd. (Barbur Blvd. Exit)

I have six years of dirt bike riding and racing behind me, raced road bicycles for years, and ridden street bikes for about 10 years.

I ride a liter sportbike and enjoy fast, very tight and twisty roads.

My stomping grounds are Skyline and its offshoots, but I also enjoy Fossil runs often.

I'm available for rides most times.

*Can't help making it sound like a Craigslist personal.

HAHA Well it looks like we have quite a few newbie's on here! Me included! I would be interested in working with a more experienced rider. Let me know when you have that list. Thanks!

I'm heartened by the interest already.

My plan is to have instructor/mentors post up their info and I'll compile a list in my original post. Then, new riders can contact via PM the leader that they would like to be paired with. The leader will decide which rider or riders to mentor.

So, for now, just post up your interest (as coach or newb) and I'll keep a tally of instructors and students.

Great idea Vaun...I've heard you talk about this, and it's great to see you putting it into action.

Vaun is a great mentor!

I'll throw in for teacher and newb...I can be both and learn from both arenas.

This is a really good idea!!! After this last weekends 'beginner-ride' I noticed just how good some of you are.

I'm looking for a mentor in lower SE Portland-ish, been riding standards, cruzers and touring bikes for 26 years. My current riding skills are ready for a remodel, forget everything I knew, start from the beginning.

Reply, PM or my number is in my profile.
I could even cover chow or BBQ to return the favor, always looking for that 'ultimate burger'.

From Lee650
Lee650 contacted me to be a mentor. I know personally that he is one of the best. But, here is his resume to prove it:

I have ridden dirt and street bikes for over 35 years.

Raced dirt bikes for 14 years here in Oregon with the OMRA Cross Country series and GP series.

Owned various street bikes from Sport to Cruiser and now have a BMW Hybrid.

I ride on the Eastside, (just because of traffic getting to the West) and would be happy to meet anyone for a couple of hrs in the evening for a little instruction.

I think it is better for coaches to just go ahead and post up in this thread.

List your:

Bona fides (years riding, types of experience, qualifications (i.e., MSF, track, professional instruction)).

Where you live.

Where you ride.

Kind of bike you ride, have experience riding and type of riding you like to do (sport, touring, supermoto, dualsport, cruiser).

Availability.

Von, Great idea! Thanks for putting this together.

I will throw my hat in as a mentor

Riding for about 5 years, lots of track days under my belt (now slow as piss ), one season of novice racing.

Where you live. SW area

Where you ride. Anywhere they take me. I have an awful sense of direction.

GSXR 600. I tried dirt for a season with little luck. So now I basically stick to sportbikes.

Availability. Open most weekday nights and weekends.

I could always use training. Especially after seeing the 'minimum' that some of these instructors have had. Plus with my new found love affair with twins I could use some coaching on how to throw this beast around a bit better, and safer. Both for her AND I.

Been riding for a bit over 2 years, most of them on the CBR, now on a Duc Monster. Live in Tigard, but am willing to ride to the mentor.

I have the 900 ss and a yamazuma scoot, i keep the scoot in town and ride it like a nut, the ducati takes me to work and then it gets worked on the way home. I am not that fast but like to work the shit out of my tires.

I guess I could throw in as an instructor.
I've been riding street for 26 years or so, year round for most of it, some dirt riding, a few years worth. I have learned from my mistakes and been a student of the art.
I have been corner working for OMRRA for 20 years (you learn a lot watching racers)
I ride a Kawasaki Concours 1000, my favorite road is 25-40 mph twisties, flicking a 600lb sport tourer to me is a hoot, I enjoy a challenge, gravel is fun.
I live near Estacada and know the east county pretty well, I am available after 5 during the week.

I would lend a helping hand. I have been riding street bikes for 17 years, dirt bikes sense I was 5 so guess I have 2 or 3 miles under my belt. I was an instructor in Pennsylvania for a few years.

I live in Gresham and work 2nd shift so I would be available in the mornings.
Love the twisties and Oregons beautiful countryside. Hit me up if you want to head out for a scoot.

That's the idea. Once we get a slate of coaches, then those who would like instruction can PM them to see if their choice is available.

But, I'd like to see the riders wanting instruction to post, too, so we know who wants to participate and how many coaches we need.

Now, now, ~T. I realize the coach profile wording recalls Craigslist, but "match-up" is not in the sense you are thinking with that reptilian brain (at least overtly).
