MY MP3 player may be phsychic (lucky to be alive)
I was riding into to work around 7am on 205 from Oregon City just before the three lane starts. I was riding in the fast lane doing the speed limit traffic was not very heavy and had a good 3 seconds between me and the car in front. Then the car abruptly slows and the rear fishtails to the rights and left. I start applying brakes and look to my right for an escape path. There is a delivery truck in the lane and too close for me to cut over it is not slowing assumption does not see impending wreck. Then the car a late model Integra and it is now sideways and starting to spin on the wet highway. Yes, left that out it is raining. Now needless to say I am at butt pucker factor 15, I look in the rear mirrors as I am now braking harder and there is a truck that did not see this happening braking and sliding behind me. If I stop he will hit me. I have slowed from 65mph from the first fishtail to 40mph this is all in seconds I am in 3rd gear from 5th.

I decide to evade to the left safety shoulder as the car is sliding into the right lane but still over half in the left. Shoulder is not that wide but still the best path. The delivery van is now swerving into my lane to evade the car coming into his path. The truck behind me is jammed up brakes ABS must be working but going towards the side of the road to avoid the delivery van. I shoot past the spinning car on the left about 6 feet to spare. The truck behind gets hit by the delivery van about middle of the front wheel well and spins off the road. The Integra stops in the right safety lane half on and half off the road the cause of the spin lost (yes it came off) passenger side wheel.

So you are asking how is the MP3 psychic? As all this was transpiring the song playing was "Jesus take the Wheel" by Carrie Underwood. As I was stopped on the side of the road trying to break the suction of my ass to the seat "Only the good die Young" by Billy Joel started playing. I tried to hit pause but skipped to the next song "Fuel" by Metallica with the adrenaline this produced it was a good pick.

This is why we have to use good riding skills you never know when shit is going to happen.

Good to hear you got your puckered ass outta there safely!

I've had my mp3 on before and I was riding quite quickly, the Jack Johnson song "inaudiable memories" came on with the line "slow down you're moving too fast". This song was not supposed to be on the play list.... Well, I listened to Jack and slowed down, just around the corner was a motorcycle cop with his lidar/radar thingy pointed right at me... Safe, haha!

Wow, glad you're safe. Out of "Monday Morning Quarterback" curiosity, is there anything you would have done differently if you'd been given an extra few seconds to see what was happening in front of you?

So what happened to cause the Integra to lose control? It seems like you would have to try pretty hard to spin out a FWD car on the freeway. Was it wet enough to be hydroplaning?

It's passenger side wheel came off;the front right one, I'm going out on limb here but my guess would be it had something to do with that.

It came off pre-spin? Yeah, that would do it.

i can see a huge part of the problem....You were listening to Carrie Underwear in the first place....Just kiddin you man. Glad your ok. Near miss' suck but are humbling and serve a good purpose i supose. better than the alternative. The story was well told and entertaining.

I rode in portland a lot and always left a tad more than 3 sec especially when its raining. I dont want to act like alot of people and tell you what you should and shouldnt do so that is all i am going to say on that.

Glad your still with us

He's in a flat spin heading out to sea.....

Or "I feel the need, The need for Speed"

Or "I will have you know when it comes to safety my plane and my crew always come first"

Fortunately I am not flying a cargo plane full of rubber dog shit to Hong Kong.

Actually like Fat Berries said I would probably have given myself some more room between us but that might have closed up the car behind me. It is all really up to the riders skill and what that "Save my ass" guy in our head tells us to do.

Thinking about it more calmly going to the left and evading as the car slid to the right was the best move in avoiding both head on and possible rear and side collisions. It was not my closest call in 26 years but pretty damn close.

Nice to hear a story where riding a motorcycle saved someone's ass. Getting out of that in a car would have been very difficult from the sounds of it. Glad you're safe!!

Dayum!!! Good to hear you avoided a potential 'sandwich'. That's a real bad stretch through there, lots of lane changing where it opens to three lanes.

I ride in any weather unless it is frozen when it falls or after it falls. Granted in the rain I ride very differently in corners and when turning at intersections etc... but rain or no rain my bike is on the road.

Good that it was a close call and not a "rider down" thread. Yea, I never panic during the chaos, but yea you do think about it later!

Riding in the rain can be tricky, but that is why we SHOULD do it more often, for the experience. I rode home in the rain today myself, 205 to hwy 14 in Vancouver, got wet, powered thru 2nd for awhile up the street to my house... what fun.

That is amazing. I am glad you are OK. Being boxed in like you were makes me nervous. I try to avoid that if I can, but much like you, if I cannot, I keep in mind the best evacuation route. Stay safe, and again, glad you're ok.
