Destination
I've sent a private message out to a fellow rider in Corvallis regarding Bike Night down there. I'm hoping we'll hear back from him today. If so it might be cool to reverse the direction of our ride (as suggested) and end in Corvallis for pizza. That way it might be easier for Justin to meet up with us too.

Our group looks strong for tonight. I've sent private messages out to a dozen Salem area riders. If any of you would do the same to get the word out it would be great.

Stay tuned and stand by. Final plans and end destination to follow shortly . . .

It's going to be a great ride tonight!

We’d then ride River Road into Independence. Taking Highway 51 over to Highway 22 we’d then turn left and head up 50th avenue and ride over the West Salem hills until we end up at Wallery’s Pizza in West Salem (1555 Edgewater NW) for Dinner somewhere around 8pm – as always, friends and family are welcome to meet up for dinner – my girl will be there.

Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Talk to your friends – send a buddy a text – get the word out. Let’s try to beat our record of eight riders. And are there no female riders in Salem? Come on girls!

And Justin, if you could make it up the freeway earlier we could ride down to Albany to meet you at 7pm and then come back up I5 and do the planned ride. What do you say?

Derek
I am thinking that the first part of this would work then in Independence turn south towards Corvalis instead of north towards 22... just a thought.

Hey guys, we'd be glad to have you stop by, the pizza is great. Derek sent me a PM and had me check out the northern forum. I'll put the word out that you're coming.

Come for part of the ride. We still haven't decided if we'll go to Corvallis or not.

We've got at least eight riders now. We just have to vote on whether we're eating dinner at 8pm at Wallery's in west Salem or headed into Corvallis for dinner.

Dinner Plans
We'll vote on destination before we leave Circle K at 6:30pm so we can notify family and friends on where to meet for dinner. I'm leaning on sticking with our original plan to ride through Independence and meet at 8pm at Wallery's in West Salem but we'll vote and then decide.

Derek

I'm leaving for business meeting now - will have access to PM's via blackberry if you need to contact me.

Great ride - great people
I reiterate Justin's observations - great way to end the day. The ride was superb for a shorty, and the pizza and golden nectar was good. Sorry Copper didn't make it - we waited an extra 2 minutes at Circle K - lol.

It was nice to meet you Jim - sorry I didn't get to say g'nite - I booked on up to River Road before I found out you went Skyline. Keep on keepin' on and we'll see you again soon. I'd like to plan a Sat. or Sun. ride up to Detroit then over to the N. Fork of the Clackamas and back through Mollala and Silverton.

Anyone?

Good Group - Good Ride
As has become usual and customary, the 12th Street Gang proved the Salem Standing Wednesday Night Ride to be pleasurable once again. We were down to five riders due to the work commitments of a number of us so unfortunate as to have jobs and were left with a somewhat grizzled bunch of gray leaning semi-distinguished gentlemen, though some small part of the riding was decidedly hooligan in nature.

We assembled at the Circle K by 6:20pm and Matt and I bantered about the ride route for ten minutes as a gaggle of future Gypsy Jokers threatened to run us down with their big wheel and challenging banter. We compromised on a plan and left to idle slowly out of town via Madrona Street till T-ing into Croisan Creek Road where I pulled over and demanded a more experienced rider take the lead out onto River Road. Soon we were on Riverdale and cranking through tight corners where riders of the bigger bikes felt as if muscling full kegs of ale in the back of a moving station wagon. When we met Vita Springs and stopped to re-group one wide-eyed participant exclaimed, “I haven’t ridden like that in a while!”

Vita Springs Road turned immediately into a tunnel of foliage as we sprinted eastwardly in a snaking convoy – a new road for many of us and one that took our slightly accented and IRA affiliated BMW rider back to his hedgerow filled youth. I watched in amazement how my fellow riders negotiated the turn onto Skyline Road and tried unsuccessfully to stay out of the oncoming lane as I worked the friction zone on the 160 degree turn at the up-hill pointed stop sign situated there, appreciative of my patient riding partners who waited before gently opening up their throttles over a series of rollercoaster hills. Past Chinook Estate we encountered a technically challenging section of taut, off camber downhill corners that sent some of us referring back to their dirt-biking history.

At the next major intersection we stopped again and cut engines for a group picture but uncooperative technology left us undocumented in the eyes of posterity – or local law enforcement, depending upon your particular personal concerns, scruples or lack thereof. As I knew the way to the Buena Vista Ferry I took the lead and practiced shifting my weight from one side of the bike to the other through an elegant sequence of 90 degree bends – which led to a significant and prolonged wobble into one of said corners and relatively low exit speed to all of them. Jim, upright, fixed and tall in the saddle behind me, shrugged off the corners at roughly twice my speed and let me accelerate away in the straights so I’d feel like I was riding fast. Approaching the ferry I encountered a swarm of barn swallows that flocked around and past me like a impenetrable cloud of feathers, which I somehow intersected unmarked, if you count not the flying insects said birds where dinning on as dusk descended.

We all survived numerous dirty and slick patches of pavement upon approach to the (closed) ferry and amassed again to take advantage of shared cloth and bug cleaner before heading back towards Independence with the moon chasing us in our mirrors like a giant, gaining GP racer. The night enveloped us into its dark womb and we four remaining rough riders rode in two clusters into West Salem. Good pizza and jovial conversation followed as we were met again by my crutches-assisted girlfriend Julia and our brother-in-handlebars Big Justin the Boilermaker who, as always, sported a devilish grin, boyish charm and expounded witty banter with good-natured warmth. All-in-all, another great Wednesday Night Ride.

Looking forward to next time . . .

Derek

Once again Derek you have put words in such a way that the full picture if the night could be viewed in our minds. Your so good at writing a vivid picture of events.

Some guys from Portland are going to do the Vernonia loop Sat., and to start they are going to be near Gaston so I am going to meet them there weather permitting, probably close to 10:30. If anybody watching this wants to go I will be going up Wallace Road to Lafayette and Gaston from Doaks Ferry Rd. around 9:30.

My cel no. is in my profile

First Halloween Ride?
I haven't seen anyone pushing for Wednesday and I really had fun on the last two. We have done hot weather, cold weather and night. Anyone up for rain, cold and night? Maybe we can meet and see who makes it to the nearest pizza place first.

C'mon......

Yee of stout constitution and staunch fortitude
Let us not let an opportunity to ride elude
Come inclement weather or darkness fall
Let’s be on our bikes and ready to haul!

I’m in Big Jim – see you tomorrow!
