I Ride: The Sounder
Lake Stevens Rider RIP
Story Updated: Jul 23, 2008 at 7:21 AM PDT
By KOMO Staff LAKE STEVENS, Wash. -- A man was killed when his motorcycle crashed into a pickup truck on Tuesday, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Trooper Keith Leary said a pickup truck headed south on State Route 127 made an illegal left turn onto 125th Drive NE. The move caused a motorcycle headed west on the roadway to slam into the side of the truck around 6:40 p.m.

The driver of the motorcycle died at the scene. His name has not been released.

The driver of the pickup, a 62-year-old Snohomish man, was not injured.

All lanes of SR 92 were shut down in both directions at 127th Drive NE for several hours after the crash, but were reopen by 9:20 p.m.

Everyone here accounted for?

Latest in the Herald is that the rider was 26 and from Snohomish, no name realeased yet. Picture shows the bike a silver Ninja with the red flames, looks like a 250. RIP to rider and thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

When the are the WSP gonna pull their head outta their ass and charge this guy with manslaughter or something.

Another rider killed and this wasn't even their fault. Just someone going somewhere and probably never knew what happened.. This makes me sick that someone does something like this..

RIP Rider

I'm feeling nausea coming on.....so tired of hearing these. People not paying attention and someone dies. I know a time comes and we all check out and it's better to go out doing something you love versus falling down a flight of stairs and dying or getting killed while being robbed but this is just too damn many riders down.cry:

RIP, prayers sent to the family and friends

R.I.P. to the rider. I now live in Lake Stevens and people seem to drive decently around here for the most part. Unfortunately, it only takes 1 person's mistake to make something like this happen.

If there's anything good to take out of this recent tragedy, I would say I am happy to see the news (at first glance) taking a neutral stance and not trying to skew the facts of the situation.

On more of a ranting note: If I was to drive my car and hit and kill a pedestrian (that was clearly my fault) I would be charged with manslaughter...yet if I was to hit and kill a motorcyclist with my car, I would probably get nothing more than a 'fail to yield right of way' ticket. Just doesn't make sense to me.

You need to talk to your county Prosecuting Attorney. They are the ones who decide to prosecute and to what level, not the investigating agency, in this case the WSP. The police only investigate and cite, the PA has final say as to the charges.

When stuff like this happens in our communities, we need to make some calls
to the PA and find out why the offender was not charged with a more serious crime. Remind the PA that they are ELECTED and that motorcyclists VOTE (at least we damn well better) and we will hold them accountable when the elections roll around.

Great food for thought.

If the WSP, say, doesn't cite the driver for something substantial, can the PA still opt for a more serious charge?

At 62 he will probably be found unfit to drive and have his license suspended. This sucks. Thoughts and prayers to his friends and family.

This morning, like most mornings, I crossed that intersection headed to work in Frontier Village. As I crossed it, I noticed the stain from oil dry and the remnants of burned out road flares on the side of the road. I had the thought that there must have been another accident there.

When I got to work, my boss asked if I had heard about the motorcycle accident that had occurred the night before. I said I hadn't and asked what had happened. He relayed the story and said he was worried it was me as that's about the time I go through there on my way home. It wasn't until the news showed a picture of the rider's bike that he knew it wasn't me. Truly a sad day for our riding community.

I must agree with the above comments about charging the driver with manslaughter or something equivalent. That intersection is marked very clearly that you are not allowed to make a left-hand turn from either side of SR92. The reason? Last year a teenage girl did something similar and caused a tractor trailer to run off the road in a desperate attempt to avoid running over the top of her. After that accident, they restricted that intersection to right-hand turns only. It is my opinion the 127th intersection needs to be permanently closed due to lack of visibility.

My thoughts are with the rider's family. RIP.

I think this intersection is being evaluated to have a traffic circle put in. It is a bad one though, even when turning right the westbound traffic is tough to guage.

A traffic circle on HWY 92?! What the?! That should make it really really interesting for the gravel trucks, log trucks and other large vehicles like that. Not to mention everyone else that has to commute through there. I'm so so so glad that my commute doesn't dictate that I take that route.

RIP rider and condolences to his family.
