Wiring Help for 2001 R6 (Integrated Tail Light)

Discussion in 'Motorcycle Talk' started by PDXF4IandZX7, Nov 19, 2011.

  1. Alright, pulled off my rear fairings today to try and hook this damn tail light up. :banghead:
Here's what the wiring looks like for the new tail light.
There's the center grouping of wires that plug right into the factory female wiring portion of the harness (I assume?). :scratchead:
The two yellow wires are for right and left turn signals.

Here's a pic of the wiring harness with the female portion showing unhooked.
Also shows another grouping of wires (2 black, 1 green, 1 blue, 1 brown) that are part of the harness which then go to the rear or front turn signals?

And here's a pic of what the above wires (2 black, 1 green, 1 blue, 1 brown) look like after getting them unwrapped and what not.
The wire sticking out to the left is green
The right side is the black and brown
The two coming down from the top are blue and black

Can anyone help me out? I thought it'd be pretty easy...but so far it is wiring +1 and me 0.

    Thanks in advance.

i dont see whats so hard to understand?
plug in what you can, strip back the wires for the blinkers, ground the grounds together and to the frame. solder, crip together the blinker leads.

    reassemble, go for a ride.

  3. Do you happen to know the color coding? Which wires are which?

    simple.
    turn key on

    turn left blinker on

use stock left blinker wire and touch to one of the yellows comeing from the tail light..if left one comes on, you win...

if the right one comes on, switch to the other available yellow.
trial and error bro (or go pick up a cheap 12v test light) just dont ground a hot lead you should be fine.

  5. Oh, forgot to mention; should the tail light on the replacement light up just as the stock one does when it is plugged in? Or does it need a complete circuit for the lights to work?
When I plug the replacement male part into the female factory portion of the wiring harness the light does not turn on. But as soon as I unplug (replacement) and plug in the stock the stock lights right up.

    sounds odd.

if he were wiring a brake/running light yes.

his question is clearly about blinkers, NO?

  8. Yeah, I hope the light isn't dead, poop :tard:

Maybe I'll just throw the stock back on and continue with hand signals, haha.

  9. Nope. Title of the thread clearly says integrated tail light, this suggests blinkers AND a brake/running light.

However you are correct, it shouldn't be hard.

  10. Thank you for taking the time to correct me, counting my original post, your post and now this post, that makes 3 unneeded post in this thread?

  12. LOL, no matter what's going on I appreciate the help and advice guys. Time to spend a few bucks and get a voltmeter.

And, of course, now something else is being weird. Bike runs fine, can bump start, but when I press the start button the cluster dies, bike shuts off basically, but then a few seconds later the cluster lights back up. Does this mean I have one of those hot wires touching something creating a short?

    you need a voltmeter.
sounds as if short, or battery has no juice.

Leave the STOCK tail light and STOCK turn signals on the bike alone.
They are DOT approved safety equipment. The stuff your trying to adapt to your bike is NOT hi-way approved.
Meaning if your rear ended you won't win the case.
You modified the bikes DOT safety equipment.
MODIFIED safety equipment isnt going to help you when LEO pulls you over.
LEO Looks for intertgrated turnsignals/stop lights.

    OK I've tried.

  15. Well, shiza, perhaps I'll save myself the trouble and keep the lighting stock. However, I'm not removing any other signals, just adding this on and then wiring (trying) to the pre-existing signals.

  16. That's what I was thinking.

Oh, and you can get one of those Harbor Freight volt meters for free usually with a coupon from motorcycle magazines (which I got for free thanks to people on this site!). It works great and is FANTASTIC compared to the TEKTON one we sell at O'Reilly auto for the same price (its a POS)

As long as the turn signals are 8" apart its legal according to an officer I asked. But yes, if you get into an accident and the lights aren't DOT approved you could be asking for trouble
