clear the road of dirt/gravel friday?

Discussion in 'Vancouver' started by TheSumoBear, Sep 19, 2012.

  1. Those sweet hair-pins with the fresh black top between Amboy and cougar are still stupid gravely. They were awesome for a while, but then gravel from the sides of the road made their way into the middle. Its been that way for a few weeks now and its just stupid and dangerous. I'm thinking we get a pick up truck and a group of guys with leaf blowers and push brooms to go clean up that section of road. With enough people this could be done pretty quickly. Wondering if anybody would be down to do this on this coming Friday? Also would it be legal? Sure would suck to get in trouble for making the road safer. But I see it as a possibility in this awesome world we live in.

I sure as hell would not be caught dead standing in the middle of the road on a hairpin corner out in the country where people drive 100,000 MPH. It's also not legal to direct/redirect traffic without a permit and an authorized flagger.

While your intentions are great, I don't think this is a good idea. If it's an issue, try contacting the county directly and voicing your concerns.

I'm also curious to know where exactly you're talking about as I was just through there Saturday and didn't notice any illegal gravel that caused issues.

  3. Wait....
    Don't you have a Tard?
  4. Lol well if we just used brooms we could hear anybody coming and just get out of the way.

It's the switch backs with the fresh black top right before the T that either takes you to cougar if you go right, or woodland to the left. A little ways past the one way bridge. It was super bad on Monday when I was up there. And it was the same a few weeks ago the last time I was there.
  5. Yea a tard with street feet on it. It's enough gravel to mess up anybody on anything.

Like I said, standing in the middle of the road focused on something other than solely your safety is a terrible idea. YOU do whatever you want....I think it's MY best interest of safety to not do this.

"Just get out of the way....." famous last words.
  7. It's a pretty slow section of road. We could have people as dedicated look outs to yell CARRR! For the people that get really into what they're doing and zone out.

Or you could just call the county and see what they say and not risk personal or another persons injury....

And that section of road is not slow. Lots of trucks with travel trailers, Boats, RV's, and jet skis come through there. That's a main thoroughfare to the campsites and reservoirs up there.
  9. Is that still Clark county out there or no?

Anything north of the Lewis River is Cowlitz County. Once you cross the green bridge it's Cowlitz. The part you are interested in is the last mile of Yale Bridge Road before it meets up with SR503.
  11. Cool man thanks. I'll look into it.

I'm just curious if you know what type of gravel your dealing with. k It most certainly makes a difference whether it's "Illegal Gravel" or the legal kind.k PS If you can't make the distinction I could direct you to someone who can;j As there was a recent, lengthy thread devoted to just such a topic...AJ

Actually, it's not going to matter if we clear it or not. It stems from trucks cutting the uphill, right hand, hairpin turn and their rear tires go off the road and spit gravel. It will be a continual problem.
  14. How annoying. Why does there need to be gravel on the shoulder anyways? :(

  15. It looks like they rebedded the road before they put the new asphalt down. They almost always put down a wider bed than asphalt. The nasty part is that it's a bit more than gravel. There are some pretty decent size rocks hanging out in the middle of the lanes there.

But, as RedKat says, it's going to be a recurring problem because of all the truck traffic through there. Also the weekend warriors that don't really know how to tow their boats and keep dragging them through the shoulder. Hopefully over the winter it will pack down or wash away and quit living in the road.

Yeah some big ones there. WE hit it today.
  17. I see if u had a leaf blower in the back a truck with 4 ways on going slow, that would be the only way i would do it.
  18. Not even shitting you I had the exact same idea lol
  19. ala safety safari... (nhra)

three guys sitting on the tailgate of a truck, each one dragging a push broom...
