    To Mattress World's Valued Customers,
Thank you all for your thoughts and comments (good and bad), I am very thankful for all that you have allowed me to do in this community. I believe working with the various charities has been the most rewarding of all. I have found that people care more about others than one might think. There are many people in this community that stay quiet in the background, while giving their hearts and souls to benefit others. It has been an honor working with you and I hope to continue in the future. Many have asked what is happening with Mattress World.

    What has happened?
I believe in being responsible for my choices. Simply stated, during good economic times, Mattress World grew very quickly, and expanded to service more of the community. However, we did not prepare the business for any potential downturn, and when the recession hit, it negatively impacted our business, like many businesses in this community and across the country. Mattress World made continuous adjustments the past two years, and when it appeared the company would survive the economic crisis, we were hit with, what we consider, an excessive and unfair tax assessment by the State of Washington - this even as an Oregon company, with no retail stores in the State of Washington. We have and continue to fight this. But, this new element created an unrecoverable financial blow, which has been reflected in our customer service and has done great harm to the reputation Mattress World worked so hard to build. I would like everyone to understand that no one at Mattress World is responsible but me, Sherri Hiner. The staff and family members were not given enough information to take care of you in the manner of which we pride ourselves. I have been liquidating everything to make sure all our customers will be taken care of. My deepest apologies for how long this has taken. It is my full intent to make sure each and every customer has been taken care of the best way possible. I ask for your patience while we use the promotional company to take care of all current customers and help us to take care of the past customers.

The Canby and Downtown locations are independently owned and operated, and have and will in the future consistently provide you with the superior service you deserve. Their goal will be to sell the highest quality mattress for the lowest price, provide jobs for our loyal employees, give back to the community by supporting all the local charities we can, and have fun.

    Thank you,
    Sherri J. Hiner

  2. Mandatory federal background check to purchase anything with cash or credit to make sure the proper taxes are paid to our masters.

  3. Buh-bye Sheri! :thefinge:

    Did I miss something here?
  5. From what I understand, they sold lots of stuff to WA residents without taxing them. WA wants the money. How do they know who bought what?

Selling big ticket items to WA residents without charging sales tax is what makes Jantzen Beach what it is. I wonder why WA State doesn't go after the hundreds of other retailers in Jantzen Beach... or maybe they are going to.

So, you're saying that if I come down there and buy something, say, a tank of gas, I'm supposed to pay WA taxes on it?

    That's ludicrous...

  8. Wait...?! THIS^^^

    What's going on here.
  9. i was just thinking about that. i grew up in vancouver and we always went across the river for big stuff... pretty common move. everyone does it. that's the point of vancouver haha!

I don't know all the details, but I know that if I (a Washington resident) go to Oregon to buy something over a certain dollar amount (which I don't know off the top of my head), then I am technically supposed to report the purchase to Washington State and pay the applicable taxes.

But, of course, nearly everyone that shops in Oregon and lives in Washington forgets that little rule.

I had no idea that Washington could hold the retailer liable. I would assume that it's up to the customer. Otherwise the retailer would have to pay B&O tax to Washington despite operating in Oregon.
  11. In similar senses, Hermiston has grown quite a bit, and I know a lot of people that will drive from Tri-Cities down to Hermiston to buy any big ticket items like electronics or furniture to save the tax too.

Anyway, I was wondering how this is motorcycle-related... that's why I asked if I missed something here. :nana
  13. Good thing its not in the motorcycle section, and its in the regional section which is for topics on and off subject that relate to that region. Yes, you missed something here. :nana

Gotcha. What a strange day I'm having...
  15. Has that ever been challenged in court. Off the top of my head that doesn't sound like something they can legally do... regulate the sales in another state.
On the other side, if I go to WA and buy anything, I would expect a full refund of the sales tax if I brought it back to OR.

Oregon residents are tax-exempt, except for services such as prepared meals at restaurants, repairs that take place within the state, etc.

Come over here and buy a microwave, flash your Oregon ID, and you'll pay no sales tax.
  17. Seems more like an importation tax though... which would not be legal between states. A sales tax implies a sale, which did not take place within WA's jurisdiction.

So basically Washington wants their cut no matter what? Sounds like the mafia to me.

When I buy something in Washington, I can see how it they can say it's their businesss and make me pay taxes to them. I'm a resident and that's how we fund our shit here.

However, where the fuck does Washington get off thinking it's any of their fucking business what I buy outside their state? Who the fuck do these people think they are?

It is none of washington's business what I do outside their state, including how much of my money I spend or on what.

Fuck Washington. This shithole has become even worse than the last shithole I escaped from... California. When you become worse than California, you have some serious problems.
  19. I think all WA residence should do their shopping in OR, please bring your hard earned money across the river and deposit it directly into our economy.

Next thing you know Washington will start sending me a tax bill for all the Mexican hookers and blow I go through on my tropical vacation.
