OSP Seeking info To ID Eluding Motorcyclist Following Trooper's Crash near Clatskanie

Discussion in 'Portland Region' started by Udoggie, Sep 26, 2011.

  1. This was from earlier in the morning (6:30am) than I've ever seen a ride posted here, but in case any knows someone who knows someone who...

Oregon State Police (OSP) is asking for the public's help to locate and identify the motorcycle and its driver involved in an early Sunday morning attempt to elude along Highway 30 near Clatskanie. The motorcyclist, who was reportedly wearing a black helmet and dark colored clothing, has not been identified after the trooper crashed her patrol car and received minor injury.

On September 25, 2011 at approximately 6:30 a.m. OSP Trooper Jessica Spurlock was patrolling westbound on Highway 30 about three miles west of Clatskanie when she saw a unknown make or model dark colored motorcycle eastbound traveling 74 mph in a 55 mph speed zone. Spurlock turned around and overtook the motorcycle in Clatskanie where she attempted a traffic stop.

The motorcycle sped up to speeds near 120 mph eastbound from Clatskanie. The trooper, with emergency lights and siren activated, kept the motorcycle in sight until losing control of the 2010 Ford Crown Victoria patrol car near milepost 59 and crashing into an embankment.

The motorcycle was last seen eastbound at a high rate of speed. Two vehicles that were westbound and may have witnessed the trooper's crash failed to stop and drove past the crash scene toward Clatskanie.

Spurlock, who has worked for OSP for 6 years, was later transported by OSP to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria where she was examined for minor injuries and released. She was using safety restraints.

OSP would like to speak with any witnesses who were westbound at the time of the trooper's crash or may have seen the motorcycle eastbound shortly after 6:30 a.m. between Clatskanie and Rainier.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the OSP Northern Command Center dispatch at 800-452-7888.

It would appear that their phrasing: "attempt to elude" is inaccurate.

  3. Isn't all of Oregon a 55mph area? 74 is still under the speed limit on some stretches in Texas.

Was the trooper cited for crashing? Who was causing the real safety problem here?

I don't advocate running, but I'm not feeling very sorry for OSP here. Maybe I'm a bad person..
  4. I was just thinking the same exact thing!

Wet roads, 120 MPH, how could it NOT end in fail? If her description is that bad, that means she never got close enough, and was doomed from the get go. Poor decision to chase IMO. Running is never a good idea and I don't condone it, but sometimes ya just gotta let em go for another day.
  6. This ^
  7. Kinda sounds like Trooper Spurlock may need some additional training in the use of a device known as Motorola and mabe some driver training might come in handy too.
I'm delighted that she wasn't seriously hurt when she lost control of her vehicle.
I wonder if she is on paid administrative leave while the investigation into the damage of state owned property is conducted?

  10. They let women drive police cars? crazy! This has win written all over it for me. I am a bad person and I dont care about cops. she shouldnt chase anyone if she cant even control her car.:mfclap:
  11. Holy shit people, a cop crashed, it happens all the time. Get off your high horses. I'm sure none of you have ever crashed a vehicle. I am sure that she will get plenty of ribbing and probably have to take a couple courses and a refresher on chase policy is probably in order.

Who cares if it was a straight road? None of us were there so we don't know what happened. Maybe she hit the brakes to avoid hitting another car? Who knows?

Glad she is alright. I'm sure it wasn't exactly a fun situation for her.

Shit, if you aren't doing 10-15 over on the freeway in the left hand lane, move the f over. Most of the freeways around DFW are 60 in town and 65 out of the city. The rural two lane highways are 70 or 75 in some places. People will do 80-85 all day long though.
  12. 55 mph speed limits on freeways are absurd. That's about all I have to contribute, lol...
  13. Release the dash cam footage. Lets see the alleged motorcycle being chased...for ID purposes, of course. Shouldn't be any reason to hide it if proper procedure was followed...

No I have never crashed a car .. I would not make the choice to pursue a speeding motorcycle that obviously was a ton faster then me, I would use something called a Motorola and call ahead, about the only thing you can do.

She is gonna get ribbing from me period, glad she is OK, but she could have just as easily died or killed another person on the road, which infuriates me. I don't care if god himself came out of nowhere and threw her off the damn road, she could have easily just radioed ahead and sustained a reasonable pace behind the fleeing vehicle. But instead pushed her luck and wrecked the police vehicle.

She is trained on what to do, and it did not stick, I'm sure the chief will send her back to boot camp to learn a little more on handling eluding vehicles.
  15. This.

"Two vehicles that were westbound and may have witnessed the trooper's crash failed to stop and drove past the crash scene toward Clatskanie."

Reading that part pissed me off.
I don't care who it is or what they do, if you see someone crash especially at a high rate of speed, stop and render aid.

  18. crown vics really aren't made to go 120 imo...even w/ good tires/suspension - too heavy, bad aeros and unwieldy at that speed.

they really should outlaw chasing speeders beyond 80mph or so - she could have killed herself or someone else - all just to give someone a speeding/eluding ticket.

Not anti-cop, and glad she's ok, but cops sure do put the public at a lot of risk in the name of safety.

  19. Yes, let's see it. after all, pigs never screw around, and are always "doing their job."

the pig should be punished and demoted for being stupid enough to think she could keep up with a bike - like give her a receptionist position at best. furthermore, the cost of the 'cruiser should come out of her pocket, rather than the tax payers'.

if i would have seen her crash, i'd be tempted to stop and laugh. crackup:

    screw the 5-0.

  20. im glad that the person who endangered a lot of lives by driving far outside their abilities at a high speed ended up in a ditch without anyone hurt and hopefully learnt their lesson. (although sadly, they wont be issued a severe fine and license restriction for their stupidity) Win for all parties.
